County call-up for Barnard Castle RUFC youngsters

FOUR young players from Barnard Castle RUFC's ladies and girls section have been selected for county honours.

Less than a year since women's rugby was introduced at the club, Millie Swinburn, Melissa Saunders and Tiegan Mckie were picked for the U15 squad, while Evie Peacock made it into the U18s.

The teenagers went for trials in Darlington where they came up against much more experienced players, including those with representative honours already under their belt.

About 70 attended the try-outs for the U15s and 60 turned up for the U18 trials.

They took part in a series of games with the coaches keeping a close eye on all the players' skills from the touchline.

Both Melissa, 15, and Evie, also 15, play in the second row, while Millie, 13, and Tiegan are centres.

Evie and Millie also play for the Teesdale School team, and Evie also turned out last season for Bishop Auckland RUFC before returning to her home club.

The successful girls were part of a group of eight from Barnard Castle RUFC who went for the trials.

They said they went as underdogs compared to most of the others – some had been playing at county level for four years – but were determined to show what they could do.

Evie, who was introduced to the sport by her dad, who used to play, said she had taken it up in year seven at school “to prove people wrong that girls can't tackle”.

The successful barney quartet will now attend county training sessions, from which age group squads of 22 will be picked.

Both U15 and U18 county teams will then open their season with games against Yorkshire.

Coach Paul Davis said he was delighted the quartet had made it through the trials.

He said with it being the club's first year with a female section, the coaches were unsure of who to put forward for the trials and how they would fare among the more experienced girls.

Girls and ladies training takes place on the Demesnes every Thursday night.
