Tuning up for the Barney Jam Music Festival

MUSIC fans from far and wide are expected to descend on the dale for the second Barney Jam Music Festival.

Organisers say everything is in place for the day-long event on Saturday, September 2, which will kick off at noon with a performance by local group Upset Beat at the Cricketers Arms.

They are one of 14 acts from across the region who will perform throughout the day and night concluding with a set from Reverend Green at the Blue Bell starting at 9.45pm.

However, the music will continue late into the night with an after show event at the Raby Arms, with admission by wristband only.

This will showcase the talents of four more local acts as well as offering those present the chance to pick up an instrument and jam.

Paul Upton, a member of the organising committee, said social media had helped to spread the word about the Barney Jam.

“There is quite a good live music scene in and around Barnard Castle and the original idea was to get people who did not know about it to come into the town and see that it has quite a bit to offer,” he said.

“Some of the feedback from last year was people saying they had brought their caravan for the weekend or booked into a B&B for the Saturday night, so for this year, we have advertised each of the venues that has got B&B to anyone coming in.”

Mr Upton added: “This year as well, a lot of bands have attracted their own little following who are coming.”

In addition to the Cricketers Arms and Blue Bell, other venues hosting Barney Jam performances are the Commercial, Three Horse Shoes, 12 Bar Blues, Golden Lion and Old Well.

Mr Upton said the programme had been devised so it was more easy listening earlier in the afternoon followed by acts for a younger demographic later in the evening.

In addition to a full day’s music, the event will also support the efforts of the Teesdale branch of Cancer Research UK.
