Winston residents learn how to save lives after spate of traffic accidents

PEOPLE in Winston have been given training in how to use a new lifesaving piece of kit that has been installed at the village hall.
The village’s parish council  arranged for the installation of a defibrillator after a spate of vehicle accidents. On one occasion a cyclist died after crashing into the back of a car.
It was thought his life might have been saved if there had been a heart start machine available. The new kit was installed thanks to cash from county councillor George Richardson's neighbourhood budget.
A small crowd of people attended the training session which took place at the village hall.
Parish council chairman Mike Taylor said: “The session, which lasted about two hours, was given by a representative of the North East Ambulance Service. It began with an explanation of the correct telephone number to ring in the case of an emergency and went on to give some basic training in the correct first aid procedures. All of those attending were given the opportunity to practice giving chest compressions and finished with a detailed description of the defibrillator and the correct way to use it.”
