Guides unite for World Thinking Day

GUIDES from across the dale came together to celebrate World Thinking Day.
Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Barnard Castle, Cockfield, Staindrop, Startforth and Middleton-in-Teesdale took part in a range of activities to mark the joint birthdays of founder member Robert Baden Powell and his wife Olave Baden Powell.
Traditionally, celebrations are held on February 22 but the Barnard Castle Division celebrated on Sunday, March 19.
The girls enjoyed Around the World in 90 minutes, which included making Tibetan prayer flags and decorating plant pots which they had planted seeds in to represent the growing friendships made within Girlguiding.
They also had fun identifying all the countries that have Guiding on a map and taking part in a taste challenge. One of the activities was led by education assistant Julia Dunn, from The Bowes Museum.
Revd Canon Alec Harding allowed the girls to join the 4pm service at St Mary’s Church, in Barnard Castle. The focal point of the service included all the girls and leaders renewing their Girlguiding promise.
They also paraded their unit flags, showed off their creations and participated with readings and prayers. The service was rounded off with some international snacks.
The girls also enjoyed a special trip to the cinema that same weekend for Beauty and the Beast.
For the first time ever Girlguiding had teamed up with Odeon Cinemas across the UK and members joined 30,000 others to enjoy the new adaption of the Disney classic.
After the film, a group of Brownies attended the Teesdale annual Rotary Club swimathon at Teesdale Leisure Centre during which they managed 161 lengths of the pool.
Barnard Castle division commissioner Karen Thompson said: “All in all it has been a very busy but extremely satisfying and rewarding weekend.
“When you see all these girls getting together and working alongside each other it is wonderful. As one Brownie, Amelie Chippendale, said: ‘My favourite part of being a Brownie is being with my friends,’ and that sums it all up.
“I am very grateful to all the leaders and volunteers in the division and to Revd Harding for allowing us to join his service.”
