Young theatre stars follow in Grandmother's Footsteps

THE junior members of youth theatre group Turrets will take to the stage on Sunday, July 16.

The Minarets will perform Grandmother’s Footsteps at The Witham.

Two inquisitive grandchildren get more than they bargain for when they investigate granny’s old chest, finding a dusty old red cloak and her diaries, which tell what really happened on the fateful day she set out through the woods.

The audience will meet Switch and Twitch the Witches, the Woodland Folk and a lost pigeon as they all join forces to rescue Little Red Riding Hood and her best friend George, who has been trapped in the woods ever since that fateful day.

Minarets was established as a junior group for Turrets Youth Theatre in 2015, providing weekly classes during term time for seven to 11-year-olds.

Since the start of the year, the group has worked with physical theatre practitioners, clowns and other touring groups developing shows at The Witham.

The senior group have also had a busy start to the year, developing their storytelling skills as they devised their own performance to tell the history of the High Sheriff as an introduction to proceedings at the County Durham Community Foundation’s High Sheriff Awards 2017, at The Bowes Museum.

More recently, the older group has been creating their own characters and narratives about Teesdale, exploring folk traditions and story as part of the Considering the Current arts project.
