Canadian music collective takes refuge at Cotherstone

VANCOUVER music collective The Fugitives really are back by popular demand following their hugely popular appearances in Durham villages two years ago

Touring again as part of the Highlights scheme, they are heading to Cotherstone tonight (Thursday, October 12) with their brand of indie/folk music, stories and banter.

Their current tour line-up includes Adrian Glynn on balalaika; guitarist Brendan McLeod; Carly Frey on violin and Chris Suen playing the and with the whole group on vocals.

Mr McLeod said the group enjoyed the rural setting of their visits to the region.

“All these shows are grass roots organised. They're put on by people in their community for people in their community. There’s a spirit and aesthetic to that which matches what we’re going for as a band.

“It means so much more to be sharing music with an audience you actually interact with, where you eat and sleep in their community, and hang out with before and after the show. It’s more intimate, and meaningful.”

The Cotherstone show, which takes place in the village hall, is part of a short tour to the UK by the group.

It has been arranged through Highlight’s partnership with Canada’s Contact East initiative to give music from north America a wider audience.

Chris Best, promoter at Cotherstone, said “This will be my last gig as organiser and I’m delighted it’s The Fugitives – what a night to end on. They’re terrific.”

The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £8. Call 01833 650827 Go to highlightsnorth. co.uk for more details.
