Middleton-in-Teesdale Carnival – get ready for a colourful day

MIDDLETON-in-Teesdale has been invaded by scarecrows in the run up to the village’s annual carnival.

Scarecrows in the shapes of butterflies, pirates, Spongebob Squarepants and Minions have taken over the village green while shop windows are filled with the likes of Spiderman, Batman and the Fat Controller.

Armies of scarecrows have even invaded private homes.

Now people attending the carnival on Saturday can follow the shopwindow scarecrow trail which follows a children’s television programme theme.

After collecting an entry form from the village newsagent, people can visit the 16 shop windows, collecting a letter from each that they can match up to clues to come up with an answer. The winner stands to win £10.

The scarecrows on the green were made by Middleton Primary School, Forest of Teesdale Primary School, the Rainbows and private individuals.

Eileen Dent, of the carnival committee, said: “We didn’t have a theme – we just left it to them to do what they want. What they have done is amazing – absolutely brilliant.”

She added that carnival events have already got underway with a successful village treasure hunt and picture board quiz organised by Christine Mitchell and Alison Brown being hosted on Wednesday, July 26, at the Masonic Hall.

Some 21 teams took part with “The Grumpy Gramps” winning the treasure hunt and “The Hutchinsons” winning the picture board.

Children’s cycle races get underway tomorrow, Thursday, at the school playground starting at 6.30pm, followed by the opening ceremony on Friday at the sports and social club at 7pm during which carnival queen Laura Thompson will be crowned. A family night follows.

Saturday’s main event begins with the annual procession of floats, fancy dress walkers and bands.

The procession gathers at the Kingsway Outdoor Centre at noon for judging and will begin marching at 12.45pm, travelling through the village to the school field.

A range of attractions await at the school.

Ms Dent said: “We have a rodeo bull, which is a first for this year, and sumo sprint races. We have the Police Interceptors and police dogs.”

Also new to the day is a tug o' war competition for teams of five.

Other events include children’s races, bouncy castle, jazz and pipe bands and pillow wars.

A range of market stalls including, WI, plants and cakes will be selling goods along with a number of craft stalls.

The ever popular dog show has categories for prettiest bitch, handsome dog, cutest puppy, waggiest tail, the dog most like their owner and the dog the judge would most like to take home. Carnival day rounds off with a 1950s and 60s Rock and Roll evening at the Sports and Social Club featuring Robson Field. Tickets on the door cost £4.
