Mickleton teenager plans adventure of a lifetime with Girlguiding North East trip to Thailand

A TEENAGER from Mickleton is hoping to raise £2,500 to set her on her way for a trip of a lifetime.

Megan Simmonds, 15, has been selected to take part in Girlguiding North East England’s trip to Thailand in August.

The Teesdale School pupil joined Middleton-in-Teesdale Rainbows when she was just five. Despite skipping Guides she then went on to join the senior section in Barnard Castle where she is now a ranger. She also helps out in Middleton-in-Teesdale with the Brownies group.

During the two-week trip this summer, Megan will be part of a team of young people and leaders who will be visiting members of the Guide Association of Thailand. She will be helping to teach Thai guides about self-worth.

She said: “I got offered a place on the trip at the end of August. They did the trip in 2015 and last time they helped to build a disabled toilet in a village. I’m not sure what we will be doing yet but I know we will be talking to Thai Guides and teaching them about self-worth and life skills.

“I am looking forward to learning about the Thai culture. I have never been abroad and their culture is very different to ours.”

Megan has a fundraising goal of £2,500 which is needed to cover the cost of food, accommodation and travel during the trip.

So far, she has raised almost a third of her target through various activities such as car boot sales. Megan also has a number of events lined up for this year including a coffee morning and a bingo session.

She said: “I need to raise £2,500. We are well on our way now. We have raised £750 so far.

“I think it is very important that we go out there and we try and help them. I am really excited. I have never been on a plane before so I am really looking forward to it.”
