Kickboxing sessions prove a knock-out hit in Evenwood

KICKBOXING sessions in Evenwood are going from strength to strength.

With 40 years experience under his belt, instructor Brian Witham runs Red Dawn kickboxing classes across the dale.

People of all ages are welcome to join the self-defence and fitness sessions regardless of their abilities. There is also the opportunity to work through the belt grading system.

Emily Grace Spraggon has been attending the class at Evenwood’s Randolph Community Centre since August last year. She was training for her junior purple belt last week and is one of about a dozen people who regularly attend the village group.

The nine-year-old Ramshaw Primary School pupil has so far obtained four belts and is now working towards the fifth grade. She is one of the highest graded in her age group in the session.

Emily’s mum Rachael Spraggon said: “Before taking up kickboxing at the community centre Emily lacked confidence and had experienced some bullying. Kickboxing has helped her to regain her confidence and strength of character.”

Mr Witham also praised Emily’s commitment and determination and hopes she continues to gain more belts.

He said: “Anyone who is interested in giving it a go should come along even if they have never done it before. It is safe and no one gets hurt. It is easy to learn. It just depends how good you want to be.”

The classes are open to those aged six and above. The Evenwood class runs every Wednesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Classes are also held at Staindrop’s Scarth Hall on Mondays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, Glaxo Social Club on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm and Ingleton Community Centre on Thursdays from 6pm to 7pm.
