Tamworths hogging the limelight at animal rescue centre

THIS trio of Tamworths have joined the ever-growing managerie at a dale animal rescue centre.

The piglets form part of the Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre conservation work to protect rare and native species.

The centre, on the A66 near Barnard Castle, has also added a Herdwick tup to its small flock.

Tamworths are considered Britain’s oldest pure breed of pig and the closest descendant to the Old English Forest Pig, with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust listing the breed as vulnerable.

Wetheriggs’ Sally Bowes said the piglets made an exciting addition to the centre’s family.

The tup forms part of the centre’s breeding project and joins three Herdwick lambs already on site

Wetheriggs is open to the public all year round, giving people the chance to visit and feed the animals. The organisation also aims to rehome its residents, with rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens being among the most popular.

Most recently, one of the centres Shetland ponies, Max, left for his new home.
