A POLICE investigation has been launched after a car was left burned out and a corner shop was raided in two separate dale villages.

The Corner Shop on North Terrace, in Gainford, was smashed open overnight on Tuesday (October 4).

Villagers were then awoken by loud bangs and "explosions" in Ingleton where a Renault Clio was seen ablaze between midnight and 12.30am on the B6279 near Manor Road.

Witnesses to the blaze said they heard loud bangs from the burning car before fire crews and two police car arrived to put out the fire just after 1am.

One villager, who did not wish to be named, said: "I went to bed at about quarter to 12 but could not sleep.

"I heard popping noises and then bangs - I came out and the front window of the car was well alight.

"I have lived here 50 years and it's the first time I've seen anything like that."

A police helicopter was seen circling Ingleton at 2am with its spotlight.

The cause of the fire is not yet known a police spokesman confirmed there were no injuries as a result of the blaze.

Liz Turton lives over the road from where the car was found.

She said: "I saw it go off - it was a mini explosion which woke me up and I phoned the fire brigade."

The Corner Shop has been taped off by police and CID teams were combing the scene at 11am.

It has not yet been confirmed by police whether the shop burglary and the burned out car are linked.

Enquiries are ongoing.
