NEW SIGNINGS: Alex Francis and Matt Wade |
West Auckland Town.. 1
Consett......................... 3
WEST'S dip in form extended to just one win from six after Consett ran out winners of this league cup first round tie.
The early season sparkle has faded a little, and manager Gary Forrest put new signings Matt Wade and Alex Francis straight into the starting line-up, while keeper Craig Turns was preferred to Adam McHugh, following his sending off last Saturday.
However, McHugh was called into action on 37 minutes after Turns picked up an injury and five minutes later he was picking the ball from the back of the net.
Consett's Jack Elliot, who impressed during his brief loan spell at West last season, swung in a cross from the right which deceived defence and keeper to give the visitors the lead at half time.
Consett continued to have the better of things during the first 20 minutes of the second half and it was no surprise when Michael Sweet headed in another excellent cross from Elliot.
West replied immediately as sub Denver Morris supplied the cross for Nathan Fisher to head home.
Any chance of a West comeback was extinguished on 81 minutes when a mistake by Francis allowed David Dowson through to put the result beyond doubt.
