Teacups aim to brew up a storm at Staindrop gig

A LOSS to Staffordshire is a gain for Staindrop as the village lands a performance by acclaimed acappella folk group, The Teacups.

They are to perform at the Scarth Memorial Hall on September 15.

Group manager Pete Ord explained the performance came about by a chance meeting on a social media website with the hall’s events co-ordinator Teresa Driscoll.

He said: “We had a gig cancel on us which fell directly between two gigs at opposite ends to the country, one up at Edinburgh and the other down at Somerset. We’d originally had a gig between the two in Staffordshire but a problem at the venue meant we were left with a gap in the tour. So the band put a shout out on Facebook to see if anyone might be able to help fill the date at short notice and Teresa got in touch.”

Ms Driscoll said it was quite coup to secure the booking.

She added: “The Teacups are creating quite a storm on the folk festival circuit. They’ve got two albums out, and they’re excellent.”

The group comprises Alex Cumming, Kate Locksley, Rosie Calvert and Will Finn who met while studying on the folk degree course at the University of Newcastle.

After the success of their debut album, One For The Pot, the band has followed up with Of Labour and Love.

Tickets for the show are £8. Doors and bar open 7.15pm, show starts at 8pm. See www.scarthhall.co.uk for details.
