New recruits strengthen Barnard Castle RUFC squad as new season kicks off

FOLLOWING last year’s memorable season where the Barnard Castle RUFC first XV narrowly missed out on promotion in the closing week, Castle hope to go from strength to strength when the new campaign kicks off this coming Saturday, September 2.

The squad have been in intensive training since mid-July and have been strengthened through the signing of players who were previously nurtured within the club before going on to play at higher levels.

Chris Wearmouth can play lock or back row and has plied his trade for Blaydon for quite a few seasons since his departure as a youngster from Barney.

During that time he skippered Blaydon and has won county and national honours.

Chris Strong previously coached and skippered Castle before opting to move to Mowden Park for a few seasons to strengthen his game.

He returns now with all the enthusiasm and accumulated nous that he always brings.

The club is also delighted to welcome back experienced physio and rehab specialist Alastair Logan to strengthen the support team.

The Barnard Castle ladies squad is training every Thursday under the tutelage of Paul Davis and hope to arrange some fixtures this season.

New recruits for both the men’s and ladies sections are always welcome and should contact Paul on 07740 086685.

Training for the men’s section is Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm down on the pitches.

The ladies (Thursdays only) start at 6.30pm.

The successful junior rugby section starts its activities for the new season at 10am on Sunday, September 3, and again will welcome any young lads and lasses aged from five years all the way up to 15.

All inquiries for the junior section should go to Lee Ainsley on 07813 855047.

Barney warmed up with a match at neighbours Upper Eden a fortnight ago and won a close but hugely enjoyable encounter 35-24.

Try scorers were George Welsby (2), Adam Kicks, Lucas Summers and Mike Hughes.

On Saturday, the first XV take on Gosforth at the Demesnes, with a 3pm kick-off while the 2nd XV team travel to Acklam.

With the current numbers training it is hoped that Castle will be able to raise a 3rd XV for a number of fixtures.
