Memorial trophies awarded at Barningham show in honour of longstanding supporters

TWO new trophies were presented at this year’s Barningham Flower and Produce Show in memory of two longstanding supporters.

The cup for best exhibit in the show was named after Beverley Peach, who served on the organising committee, while the winner of the best wildlife photograph received the Sir Anthony Milbank trophy – a bronze resin sculpture of a hare made by wildlife artist Stef Ottevanger, who lives in Barningham.

The trophy was presented by Sir Anthony’s son Sir Edward to Laura Dunphy, whose photograph of mushrooms was judged to be the best.

Ms Dunphy, of Catterick Village, grew up in Barningham, where her parents still live.

The Beverley Peach trophy went to Angie Townsend, for her landscape painting.

Sir Edward thanked Ms Ottevanger for her work on the trophy and applauded the efforts of all those who had entered the show.

“I had a look around and there are some very familiar names winning this year,” he said.

“The vegetable section is dominated by two people and the standard is as high as ever.”

Among those celebrating was Shirley Madrell, who left laden with silverware, including trophies for best eggs, best wine, most points in cookery and preserves and joint most points in the handicrafts section.

Show secretary Jill Collyer said entries were on a par with last year, however, an influx of young families to Barningham and the surrounding villages had given the children’s section a boost.
