As part of a new entry into the competition, Middleton-in-Teesdale’s committee had installed new fruit and vegetable containers near the village’s primary school.
The idea is for people to help themselves to the strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, courgettes and other items produced by the plants.
Instead, someone stole the tomato, strawberry and courgette plants overnight on Monday, July 3.
Committee member Pam Phillips said: “Village people are disappointed and saddened that one of the newly planted vegetable and fruit containers has been vandalised.
“Plants were stolen or just pulled out with soil strewn on the pavement. The planter was there for everyone in the village to enjoy the produce – adults, children and visitors. Hopefully this was just a one-off thoughtless act and that the people who were responsible will think about other people and not do it again."
“After last night’s incident, any further planting of this nature will have to be given careful consideration. But why should the actions of a few spoil the enjoyment of many?”
Her husband Graham, who helped build stands to the planters, added: “I can’t believe someone in Middleton would do it. I am surprised it has happened in a place like this.”
The committee’s hope that it was a one-off incident were dashed when a large replacement tomato plant, bought at a discount from Sam Turners, was taken the following night. The plant was still in its pot.
Particularly disturbing for the committee was that the planters form part of a new entry into the It’s Your Neighbourhood section of the Northumbria-in-Bloom competition.
Judging of Middleton-in-Teesdale’s entry took place on Monday, July 10.
Last year the village won gold in the competition, earning it the title of the prettiest village in the North of England.
The thefts have been reported to the police.
