A DALE watersports club is hoping new facilities will attract a new generation of sailors.
During the off season, Teesdale Sailing and Watersports Club oversaw the construction of a new shed/workshop at its Grassholme Reservoir base.
It was made possible thanks to a five-figure development grant from Sport England and complements the existing clubhouse and changing rooms.
Club trustee Chris Dauber said: “We are moving forward. We have some of the best facilities in the North East of England.
“The new shed makes such a difference with us being able to work on boats and engines under cover.”
The shed was built by Cotherstone-based Hodgson’s.
“This is all part of our efforts to build up the membership,” added Mr Dauber.
“The issue is trying to get the next generation out onto the water. Everyone seems to have less leisure time than when we were kids.
“We do get big groups up – when the weather improves we will be hosting Staindrop Cubs – and we try to get them fired up and enthusiastic, but only a very small proportion come back.”
He added: “The offer here is quite good. We have spent a lot on equipment and we have wet suits, buoyancy aids, safety equipment etc, but getting the message out isn’t that easy.”
The club has also invested in a variety of its own boats ranging from single handers to craft which can cater for three or four sailors.
Anyone interested in taking to the water is welcome to go along to the club.
Commodore Paul Davison said: “We can give people a taste and we then offer sail experience days which are very hands-on. We also offer the RYA training courses.
“It is a very friendly atmosphere. You can learn just be being here and we always try to get someone out if the turn up.”
The club is currently gearing up to host the North East Youth Travellers Series competition on Saturday, May 13.
The next club open day will be on Saturday, May 20, from 11.30am to 3.30pm.
Club sailing days are held ever Sunday from 10am.
