Plans underway to make Barnard Castle beautiful this summer

BARNARD Castle’s town centre should be a blaze of colour again this summer.
The town council is planning a number of floral displays at various locations.
Up to £500 is to be spent planting perennials in the flower beds at the public toilets in Market Place.
Cllr Roger Peat, chairman of the council’s services committee, said planting perennials instead of annuals would save the council money.
“It was costing £800 a year. We can get more value for money by doing more permanent planting,” he said.
The gateway flower bed, adjacent to Niche Living, in Galgate, is to be used again to create a “Dig for Victory” vegetable display as part of the town’s 1940s weekend event in June. This display will be managed by Veg Out in Barney and the YMCA.
Three large flower tubs in Woodleigh grounds, on Scar Top, are not to be used for plants this summer because the flowers get eaten by rabbits. Outside the post office, at the junction of Galgate and Horsemarket, there will be a display of 12 hanging baskets.
Councillors agreed to spend £300 on this display.
