Hit Edinburgh show comes to Barningham

A SMASH hit show from the Edinburgh Fringe festival will be performed at a dale village hall next week.
On Thursday, March 16, Barningham Village Hall is hosting Labels, a story about multicultural Britain.
Written and performed by Joe Sellman-Leava, it is a funny, moving and true story of his upbringing in rural Devon in the 1990s as a boy of mixed heritage and the bridges and barriers that were formed between him and his peers.
Labels is a production from Working Light Theatre, a company which creates works from personal stories that ask questions about who we are and the changing world around us. It draws on Joe Sellman-Leava’s own experiences and uses a mixture of stand-up comedy, storytelling and poetry to explore the line between curiosity and fear and the rise of anti-immigration rhetoric.
Amid the cacophony of statistics and soundbites around the immigration debate, Labels offers an honest, human story about multi-cultural Britain.
The show is touring throughout the UK this spring and as far afield as Singapore and Australia, but this is the only date in Teesdale.
Labels comes under the banner of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme that brings professional theatre and music to village halls and community venues across the North Pennines.
Robin Brooks, a member of Barningham Village Hall committee, said: “This is a bit different from Highlights shows we’ve had in the past.
“It’s topical and promises to be a lively, warm and thought-provoking look at who we are, where we have come from and where we are going as a society. Joe has offered a question and answer session after the show so there’s a chance for the audience to have their say too.”
The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £9.50 for adults, £4 for children and £20 for families.
Call 01833 621203 or email rpbrooks72@gmail.com to reserve tickets, or book on line at www.highlightsnorth.co.uk.  Showgoers are welcome to bring their own drinks.
