No chance of slower speed limit? That's 'cobblers' says Middleton-in-Teesdale parish councillor

That was the response of a parish councillor after being told there was no possibility of the speed limit being reduced through an upper dale community.
Middleton-in-Teesdale Parish Council had asked Durham County Council’s highways officials if the limit could be lowered through Newbiggin and Dent Bank.
Members were told the county council thought this was impossible as the road is subject to the national speed limit.
Cllr John Boocock disagreed. “That’s absolute cobblers,” he said.
Cllr Boocock said the regulations referred to by the county council were laid down as “advice” and not “hard and fast” rules.
Cllr Lynne Oxby, who also serves on neighbouring Eggleston Parish Council, highlighted the situation at Folly Top. “We have been refused three times for a slower speed limit there yet they will put a 40mph limit on at Evenwood Gate,” she said.
Cllr Boocock pointed out that the speed limit through Middleton Tyas, near Scotch Corner, was just 20mph.
“Why is it not 20mph in Middleton? It can be done.”
He said it was worth continuing efforts to introduce a slower speed limit at Newbiggin and Dent Bank.
