Richard's stunning photo brings Egglestone Abbey into wider focus

A PICURE taken by Hutton Magna-based photographer Richard Laidler has been selected by Historic England to bring Egglestone Abbey into a wider view.
Mr Laidler’s image will be added to the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) database, which has almost 400,000 entries for “listed” buildings and places.
However, none of these entries include images and the NHLE opened its list for public contributions, looking for images, insights and stories of special places.
Photographers have been invited to submit images for inclusion on this database and when approved, they will remain on the national database which is accessed from all over the world, about 200,000 times each month.
Mr Laidler said he found out about the project through a photo magazine.
“I have a couple of good shots of Egglestone Abbey so I registered with their project and uploaded them.”
Within a couple of days, he had received notification that his picture – the 15,000th received – had been accepted and would be used for internal and external communications.
Mr Laidler added: “I took this picture in early February this year when the weather was a mixture of heavy squally showers driven on a north-westerly wind, followed by some wonderful skies and brilliant sunshine. The sun is lower at that time of year so the abbey was lit up nicely.
“Big skies is something we get of lot of in Teesdale, and wherever possible I like to include one in my pictures, as was the case in this one.”
For the technically interested, Mr Laidler took the pictured with a Canon EOS 70D, 10-22mm EF-S lens at 10mm and a circular polarizing filter to emphasize the sky.
More of his photos can be viewed at www.middleton photos.co.uk.
Two of his pictures have also been used in the Teesdale Mercury 2017 calendar. He has also produced large format 2017 calendar of his Teesdale images, available from the post office in Middleton in Teesdale and Curlew Books in Barnard Castle.
