Katie unveils new-look chippie in Barnard Castle town centre

A Barnard Castle fish and chip shop has undergone a complete rebranding after coming under new ownership.
The former Fryer Tuck chippy, on Horsemarket, has been transformed into Katie’s Traditional Fish and Chips after being taken over by Katie Barker, from Hutton Magna, who has a long history in the business having worked from early childhood in her parent’s fish and chip shops in Richmond and more recently as manager of the Fox Hall Inn on the A66.
Her parents, Steve and Jennifer Barker, recently gave up the inn, which was famous for its fish and chips.
Miss Barker said: “It was huge, too much really because mum and dad want to retire.”
They are now helping Miss Barker as she sets up her first business.
While retaining some of Fryer Tuck’s features, including the soft serve ice-cream, regulars can look forward to exciting additions including the fish cakes that the Fox Hall Inn was renowned for.
The shop reopened last week after a refurbishment.
The 23-year-old said: “It has been really good, everyone has been very nice. We have been left a good business and the location is excellent.”
She added that all of the staff from Fryer Tuck’s had been retained and plans are to increase staff numbers to extend the opening hours.
The shop is currently open between 11.30am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday.
